The Best Food in Portland, OR: Food Carts, James Beard Winners and How to Avoid Booking the Wrong Portland

The best food in Portland, OR falls into three groups: about 500 food carts gathered in roughly 25 lots called pods, a short list of chef-led restaurants that win national awards, and a few downtown dining rooms that are more than a century old. Portland has no MICHELIN stars, because no MICHELIN Guide covers Oregon. The awards that matter here are the James Beard Awards, and Portland chefs won two of them in 2026.

The short answer. For a tasting menu, Langbaan (Thai) or Nodoguro (Japanese). For one dinner that represents the city, Kann or Le Pigeon. For a casual meal, a food cart pod such as Cartopia or the Midtown Beer Garden. For a vegan meal, Mirisata. For the oldest dining room in town, Huber's. One caution before any of that: there are two Portlands with serious restaurants, and search results mix them. This guide is about Portland, Oregon, and it explains how to tell the two apart.

Portland, Oregon or Portland, Maine: check before you book

We read 162 common search phrases that combine Portland with food or restaurants. Together they account for about 253,000 searches a month. Thirty-one of them name Maine, and those 31 add up to about 66,900 searches a month. Sixteen name Oregon, a quadrant of the city or one of its shopping districts, and they add up to about 15,300. Among searches that say which Portland they mean, Maine is named about four times as often as Oregon.

Most of the rest do not say. A phrase such as "best restaurants Portland" can return either city, and some of the most searched restaurant names in the set are in Maine although the search does not mention the state:

  • Fore Street is at 288 Fore Street in the Old Port district of Portland, Maine. It opened in June 1996.
  • Street and Company is at 33 Wharf Street in Portland, Maine.
  • Scales is on Maine Wharf at 68 Commercial Street in Portland, Maine.

All three belong to the same restaurateur, Dana Street, who won the 2026 James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur. Searches for those three names come to about 19,900 a month across five phrases, and three of the five phrases do not include the word Maine.

Three checks separate the two cities quickly:

  • The address prefix. Almost every street address in Portland, Oregon starts with N, NE, NW, S, SE or SW. Maine addresses do not.
  • The ZIP code. Oregon ZIP codes for Portland start with 972. Maine ZIP codes for Portland start with 041.
  • The area code. Oregon numbers start with 503 or 971. Maine numbers start with 207.

The same problem affects Vancouver, which is both a city in British Columbia and a city in Washington State directly across the Columbia River from Portland. The guide to the best restaurants in Vancouver, Canada covers that case.

The best food carts in Portland are in pods

A food cart in Portland is a small kitchen in a trailer or a truck that usually stays in one place. A pod is a lot where several carts share tables, and often a bar and a covered seating area. In 2025 the city had approximately 500 food carts in approximately 25 pods. The first cart, which sold kosher hot dogs, opened across from City Hall in 1965.

Fifteen of the 162 search phrases ask for food carts, food trucks or pods. In Portland the three words are used for the same thing. Four pods are a reasonable place to start:

  • Midtown Beer Garden, downtown on SW 5th Avenue between Harvey Milk Street and Oak Street. Carts have operated on this block since the early 1980s, and it is considered the oldest pod in the city.
  • Cartopia, at SE 12th Avenue and Hawthorne Boulevard. It has picnic tables, fire pits and string lights, and it is known for late-night food.
  • Hawthorne Asylum, at 1080 SE Madison Street, a few blocks from Cartopia.
  • Portland Mercado, in the Mt. Scott-Arleta neighborhood of Southeast Portland. It opened in 2015 and focuses on Latin American food. A fire damaged its central building in 2024, so check its current hours before a visit.

Pods open and close. The large Alder Street pod downtown, which many older guides still recommend, closed in 2019. Individual carts move between pods and keep their own hours, so check a cart's own page on the day.

Where to eat in Portland by area: the address tells you

Portland is divided into six sections: North, Northeast, Northwest, South, Southeast and Southwest. The Willamette River divides east from west, and Burnside Street divides north from south. The sixth section, South Portland, was created in 2020, so guides that describe four or five "quadrants" are out of date. Every address carries its section as a prefix, which makes it easy to see how far apart two restaurants are.

  • Southeast (SE) has the largest number of restaurants on the shortlist. Kann, Kachka and Nostrana are close to one another in the inner Southeast, and Cartopia and Hawthorne Asylum are close by. Mirisata is farther east on Belmont Street.
  • East Burnside is the dividing line itself. Le Pigeon is at 738 E Burnside Street, and Screen Door has an Eastside location as well.
  • Northwest (NW) covers the Pearl District and the streets around NW 23rd Avenue. Langbaan is here, and Screen Door has a second location in the Pearl District.
  • Southwest (SW) is downtown. Nodoguro, Huber's and Jake's Famous Crawfish are all downtown, and so is the Midtown Beer Garden.

Three nearby places are separate cities and are not covered here: Beaverton and Lake Oswego in Oregon, and Vancouver in Washington. Portland International Airport, known as PDX, is inside the Portland city limits, about 12 miles from downtown by highway. The MAX Red Line light rail runs between the airport and downtown.

MICHELIN star restaurants in Portland: there are none, in either Portland

No restaurant in Portland, Oregon has a MICHELIN star, and the reason is coverage, not quality. MICHELIN publishes guides for specific cities and states, and Oregon is not one of them. On October 13, 2026 the guide's website had no restaurant listing for Oregon and none for Maine, while its California listing showed 515 restaurants.

According to a 2025 report by KPTV, the city's tourism office, Travel Portland, received a call from MICHELIN in 2018 and decided not to pursue a guide. MICHELIN told the station in February 2025 that no new North American locations were in the works. The nearest state with a guide is California; see the best food in Los Angeles for how its stars are counted there.

The national award that does cover Portland is the James Beard Award. The 2026 winners included three from a city named Portland:

Award, 2026WinnerWhich Portland
Best Chef: Northwest and PacificRyan Roadhouse, NodoguroOregon
Outstanding BarScotch LodgeOregon
Outstanding RestaurateurDana Street (Fore Street, Scales, Standard Baking Co.)Maine

Scotch Lodge is a bar at 215 SE 9th Avenue with a list of about 300 whiskeys and a food menu. Thomas Pisha-Duffly of Gado Gado, also in Portland, Oregon, was a finalist in the same chef category that Ryan Roadhouse won. Two years earlier, in 2024, Langbaan won the award for Outstanding Restaurant, which is a national category and not a regional one.

Vegan restaurants in Portland, and other things people search for

"Vegan restaurants Portland" is searched about 1,600 times a month, and the two vegan phrases in the set add up to about 2,000. Two options on the shortlist were confirmed on their own websites. Mirisata, at 2420 SE Belmont Street, serves Sri Lankan rice and curry, and states that its food is 100 percent vegan. Le Pigeon offers a vegetarian tasting menu alongside its regular one.

Thai food is one of the most searched cuisines: 10 of the 162 phrases name it. Langbaan is the tasting-menu option. It seats guests at two set times each evening from Wednesday to Sunday, and it releases a full month of reservations at noon on the 15th of the month before.

Several of the most searched restaurant names have changed since the guides that mention them were written. Ava Gene's, the Italian restaurant at 3377 SE Division Street, closed during the pandemic and reopened in 2023. República, a Mexican tasting-menu restaurant in the Pearl District, announced in January 2026 that it would close after a final dinner on February 21, and later announced plans for daytime service. Confirm its current status before planning a meal there. Langbaan itself is often described as hidden behind another restaurant in Southeast Portland; it has since moved to NW 23rd Place.

How to eat out in Portland, Oregon

An orange Portland Streetcar signed A, Lloyd via Pearl, turning on a wet street beside an apartment building and a highway overpass
  • There is no sales tax. Oregon does not have a general sales tax, so the menu price is the price before the tip.
  • Book tasting menus weeks ahead. Langbaan, Nodoguro, Kann and Le Pigeon take reservations. Book as early as you can, and check each restaurant's own page for release dates.
  • Expect a wait for brunch. Screen Door is mostly walk-in and suggests Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday for a shorter wait.
  • Plan by section. Inner Southeast, East Burnside and downtown each hold several restaurants within walking distance. Crossing the river between them is a short ride by streetcar, bus or bike.
  • Check hours on the day. Several of the restaurants above close one or two days a week, and food carts keep their own schedules.
  • Read the state before you reserve. If a restaurant page shows a 207 phone number or an 041 ZIP code, it is in Maine.
