Best Restaurants in Vancouver, Canada: 11 Starred Rooms, 12 MICHELIN Stars and the First Two-Star

The list of the best restaurants in Vancouver, Canada, changed last night. On October 6, 2026, the MICHELIN Guide gave the city its first two-star restaurant and took a star away from a room that had held one since the guide arrived. Vancouver had twelve stars on Monday and has twelve stars today. They are just not in the same places, and every roundup written before this week is now wrong about the top of the list.

The short version. Book AnnaLena if you want the best table in the city, and book it early, because it just became the hardest. Book Published on Main if you want the one the continental jury prefers. Eat dim sum at a Bib Gourmand, not at a starred room, because there is no starred dim sum. And before you trust any search result with the word Vancouver in it, check which Vancouver it means. One search in five is about a city in Washington State.

MICHELIN star restaurants in Vancouver: the 2026 count

MICHELIN announced the 2026 Vancouver selection on October 6. It lists 72 restaurants: one with two stars, ten with one star, 16 Bib Gourmands and 45 recommended addresses. That is the full list as Vancouver Magazine printed it, and it is four restaurants shorter than last year's 76.

So the number to remember is 11 starred restaurants holding 12 stars. Not 12 restaurants, which was true until Tuesday, and not 11 stars, which is what you get if you count names instead of stars.

Five Japanese kitchens, three contemporary tasting menus, one Beijing duck house, one Quebecois dining room and one restaurant that is Japanese and Italian at once. That is fine dining in Vancouver in a sentence, and it is an honest picture of the city: the Pacific first, France second.

Three things changed on Tuesday, and most pages have not caught up.

  • Vancouver has a two-star restaurant for the first time. AnnaLena, at 1809 West 1st Avenue in Kitsilano, had held one star since the first guide. Chef Michael Robbins serves a tasting menu in a room with no white tablecloths, which the inspectors went out of their way to mention. If a page tells you Vancouver has no two-star, it was written before October 6.
  • Barbara lost its star. The 17-seat tasting menu restaurant in Chinatown had been starred in every edition since 2022. It is now listed as Recommended. It is still open and still in the guide. It is simply no longer one of the eleven, and a great many lists still say it is.
  • Nobody new was starred. AnnaLena's second star is the only star awarded this year. The new names are two Bib Gourmands, Kavita and Chef's Choice Seafood Restaurant, and four recommended addresses. One star up, one star down, and the total stays at twelve.

The guide itself is young. It launched on October 27, 2022, which makes this the fifth edition, and seven of the eleven starred restaurants have been on the list every year. A star count is a fact with a date on it. This one is dated yesterday. For the same arithmetic at world scale, see which city has the most MICHELIN stars.

Three juries, and the two restaurants they share

MICHELIN is one opinion. Two others are worth your time: Canada's 100 Best, a national panel, and North America's 50 Best, the continental list announced on May 28, 2026. Line the three up and Vancouver gives a clear answer with one argument left in it.

AnnaLenaTwo starsNo. 12No. 35

Kissa TantoOne starNo. 15Not ranked
Sumibiyaki ArashiOne starNo. 17Not ranked

Canada's 100 Best puts four Vancouver restaurants in its top 20, and all four hold a star. North America's 50 Best names two restaurants in the city, and both are on the other two lists. AnnaLena and Published on Main are the only names all three juries share.

Here is the argument. MICHELIN and the national panel both put AnnaLena first. The continental jury puts Published on Main eighteen places ahead of it. Both cook contemporary food from British Columbia produce, a short drive apart, and you cannot settle this from a table. If you have two nights and a budget, eat at both and pick a side. If you have one, AnnaLena has two of three juries and the only second star in town.

Read this against the other two Canadian cities we have counted. In Montreal, the province's only two-star is in Quebec City. In Toronto, the guide's only two-star is on a farm in Niagara, about 100 kilometers from the city. Vancouver is now the only one of the three with a two-star restaurant inside the city limits. You can take a bus to it.

Which Vancouver? One search in five means the other one

There are two cities called Vancouver on the west coast, and search engines are not careful about which one you meant. Vancouver, Washington, sits on the north bank of the Columbia River, across from Portland, Oregon. It has about 190,000 people, a waterfront and plenty of restaurants. It is roughly 500 kilometers south of the Vancouver this guide is about, in a different country.

We counted 131 common search phrases about Vancouver restaurants, worth about 114,000 searches a month. 29 of them say "WA" outright, and those 29 carry 20.7 percent of the volume. That is the floor. It leaves out every Washington restaurant that people search for without naming the state, and those are the ones that cause trouble.

Elmer's, Mill Plain1,300Vancouver, WA
La Bottega1,300Vancouver, WA

Beaches is the one to remember. People search for "Beaches restaurant and bar Vancouver" 9,900 times a month, which ties it for the most-searched restaurant name in the whole file. It is a bar and grill on the Columbia River, and its own site gives a Washington address and a 360 area code. Hudson's is inside a lodge on Greenwood Drive, also in Washington. Neither has anything to do with British Columbia, and neither search says so.

The rule is short. If a result has a five-digit ZIP code, a 360 phone number or a street that starts with NE or SE, you are reading about Washington. Vancouver, Canada, uses postal codes that start with V and phone numbers that start with 604 or 778. Add "BC" or "Canada" to the search and most of the problem goes away.

The Vancouver restaurants people actually search for

Take the Washington names out and look at what is left. 42 of the 131 phrases name a specific restaurant, and those carry 45 percent of all the searches. These are the British Columbia names with the most volume, with every spelling of each added together.

None of the eight holds a star. Only two starred restaurants appear in the file by name at all, AnnaLena and St. Lawrence, at 390 searches a month each. Together that is under 2 percent of the named-restaurant volume. The first two-star in the history of the city is searched for about as often as a single taco shop is searched for in three days.

This is not bad taste. A tasting menu is a decision you make once or twice a year. Tacos on Fraser Street, Cambodian chicken wings in Chinatown and a steak downtown are decisions you make on a Thursday. A guide that only lists the stars answers the rare question. What matters more about this table is that three of the eight are not where, or what, the internet says they are.

  • Le Crocodile has a new owner and a new chef. The most-searched restaurant in Vancouver was Michel Jacob's French dining room for four decades. Jacob retired in the spring of 2024, and the room reopened that June as Le Crocodile by Rob Feenie. Same name on the door, same address on Burrard Street, different kitchen. Any review older than mid 2024 describes a restaurant that has since changed hands. The current one serves dinner Tuesday to Sunday and is closed on Mondays.
  • Sal y Limón moved. The original taco shop at 701 Kingsway served its last day on July 5, 2025, because the building is being replaced by a tower. The team reopened a few blocks away at 6196 Fraser Street. Older lists still send you to Kingsway. Do not go to Kingsway.
  • Linh Café is not in Kitsilano anymore. The French and Vietnamese restaurant opened on West 4th Avenue, and older listings still file it there. Its own site says it has been in the Beach District since 2021, on the downtown side of False Creek.

The boardwalk on Granville Island, looking across False Creek at the downtown towers. Linh Café is on that side of the water now. Older listings still have it in Kitsilano.

One survivor deserves a line. The Top of Vancouver Revolving Restaurant, 167 meters up Harbour Centre, still turns and still takes reservations. It draws over 1,000 searches a month and no jury ranks it. Go for the view at sunset, order simply, and do not confuse it with the best meal of your trip.

Where to eat in Vancouver, and where Vancouver stops

Vancouver proper is small. It is one of 21 municipalities in the metro area, and several of the others are where people assume the best food is. Know the line before you plan.

Richmond is a separate city. It is the next city south, it is where the airport is, and it is where a large share of the region's Cantonese cooking lives. Vancouver International Airport is on Sea Island, in Richmond, about 12 kilometers from downtown. Not one of the eleven starred restaurants is in Richmond, Burnaby, North Vancouver or West Vancouver. Every star in the guide is inside the city limits. If a list tells you the best dim sum in Vancouver is in Richmond, it may well be right about the dim sum. It is wrong about the city.

Inside the line, the names in this guide cluster in five places.

  • Mount Pleasant and Main Street. Three stars in one neighborhood, Burdock & Co, Sumibiyaki Arashi and the Beijing duck at iDen & QuanJuDe, with Published on Main farther up Main Street in Riley Park. If you only learn one part of the city for dinner, learn this one.
  • Chinatown and Railtown. Kissa Tanto, St. Lawrence, Barbara and Phnom Penh are within a short walk of each other on the east side of downtown. Two stars, one former star and the most-searched Bib Gourmand in the city, in a few blocks.
  • Kitsilano. AnnaLena, and the reason to cross the bridge. It is a residential neighborhood by the beach, not a restaurant district, which is part of the point.
  • Downtown and the West End. The sushi counters: Okeya Kyujiro, Sushi Masuda and Sushi Hyun. Also Le Crocodile on Burrard Street, Nightingale on West Hastings, and Joe Fortes on Thurlow Street, which is open from 11 in the morning to 11 at night, seven days a week, and is the answer when nothing else is.
  • Yaletown and the waterfront. Blue Water Cafe at 1095 Hamilton Street for seafood, with dinner every night, and Miku by the harbor for the dish below.

Two dishes belong to this city more than to any other in Canada.

Aburi sushi. Aburi means flame-seared: pressed sushi, usually salmon, finished with a torch so the top caramelizes and the fish underneath stays cool. Miku says it introduced the style to Vancouver in 2008, from a first location on West Hastings Street, and has since moved to the waterfront. MICHELIN lists it as Recommended. Every sushi restaurant in the city now has a version. Have the original once so you know what the copies are copying.

Shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings and chicken feet, the three things to judge a dim sum kitchen by. No dim sum restaurant in Vancouver holds a star. Three hold a Bib Gourmand.

Dim sum. People search for the best dim sum restaurant in Vancouver about 590 times a month, and the honest answer is not on the star list. The guide's Cantonese and dim sum picks are Bib Gourmands, its label for good cooking at a moderate price: Chef's Choice Seafood Restaurant, promoted this week, Seaport City Seafood, and Little Bird Dim Sum + Craft Beer. Go before noon, go with at least four people, and order more than you think you need. Dim sum is priced by the basket, and the mistake is always ordering too little.

How to eat out in Vancouver

  • Book AnnaLena now, not later. A second star changes a reservation book overnight. The room did not get any bigger. If your dates are fixed, book before you book the flight.
  • Check the date on any list. Anything published before October 6, 2026, has the wrong two-star count and still stars Barbara. Anything before mid 2024 describes the old Le Crocodile. Anything before July 2025 has Sal y Limón on the wrong street.
  • Check the days, not just the hours. Le Crocodile is closed on Mondays. Joe Fortes is never closed. The closed day is the one that ruins a plan.
  • Search with "BC" in it. It removes a fifth of the noise at a stroke. If a restaurant looks perfect and oddly cheap, look at the area code before you get attached.
  • Tip. Unlike most of Europe or Japan, tipping is expected in Vancouver restaurants. 18 to 20 percent is the usual range on the card machine.
  • Use the SkyTrain from the airport. The Canada Line runs from the airport in Richmond to downtown. Eat in the city, then go.

Heading east? The Toronto list is built the same way, and every other city is on the destinations page.
