Best Food Chicago: Three Classics, 19 Starred Restaurants and What the City Searches For

Every guide to the best food in Chicago opens with deep-dish pizza. Fair enough. It is the famous one. But we counted what people search for when they want to eat in Chicago: 175 phrases, about 552,000 searches a month. One of those phrases mentions pizza. None mentions a hot dog or an Italian beef. The city's three signature dishes are what visitors are told to want. They are not what anyone is looking for.
The short version. Eat the three classics once each, and learn how each one works before you order. Then eat by cuisine and by neighborhood, because that is how Chicago is built. The MICHELIN count is 19 starred restaurants today, not the 20 that were announced, and it changes again on December 14, 2026. Details and sources for all of it are below.
The three Chicago classics, and how each one works
Deep-dish pizza. A tall outer crust, a very large amount of cheese, and chunky tomato sauce on top of the cheese instead of under it. It is built upside down compared with every other pizza you have eaten, and it is closer to a pie than to a flatbread. Two slices is a meal. Plan for that, and for a wait while it bakes.
Who invented it is disputed, and the dispute is the useful part. Pizzeria Uno, founded in Chicago in 1943, claims the original. A Chicago Daily News account credits the recipe to Rudy Malnati Sr., who worked there. His son Lou opened the first Lou Malnati's on March 17, 1971, and he opened it in Lincolnwood, which is a suburb. The third name locals argue for is Pequod's, at 2207 N Clybourn Avenue, which asks you to reserve. The lesson: there is no single correct deep dish. There are three families of it, and you only have room for one.
The Chicago hot dog. An all-beef frankfurter on a poppy seed bun with yellow mustard, chopped white onion, bright green relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato, pickled sport peppers and celery salt. Seven toppings, and ketchup is not one of them. Some stands refuse to stock it. The reason given is sweetness: ketchup covers the salt and the sour that the other seven are balancing. You do not have to agree. You do have to not ask.
Superdawg has stood at 6363 N Milwaukee Avenue since May 1948, a drive-in with carhop service that stays open until 1 am on weeknights and 2 am on Fridays and Saturdays. The other name you will hear is Gene & Jude's. Worth knowing before you set out: it is at 2720 N River Road in River Grove, which is not Chicago.
Italian beef. Thin-sliced seasoned roast beef on French bread, traced to Italian American immigrants in Chicago in the 1930s. You make two choices. "Hot" means spicy giardiniera, "sweet" means mild bell peppers. Then you decide how wet you want it, because the whole sandwich can be dipped in the juice the meat cooked in. The bread is crusty on purpose, so it survives the dip. Al's Beef dates itself to 1938. Mr. Beef, at 666 N Orleans Street since 1979, is the storefront and the inspiration for the television series The Bear.
Here is what most advice misses. The stars in Chicago are all inside the city limits, as you will see below. The cheap classics are the ones that leak into the suburbs. That is the reverse of Los Angeles, where eight of 25 starred restaurants are in other cities. Check the town on the address before you get in a car for a hot dog.
Best food in Chicago by cuisine and by neighborhood
Now the part people are searching for. In our list, 43 phrases take the form "best something food in Chicago", and they name 21 different cuisines. Together they are about 17,800 searches a month. Nobody types "best deep dish" into this list. They type a cuisine.
| Cuisine searched | Phrases | Searches a month |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese | 5 | 3,990 |
| Thai | 2 | 1,860 |
| Mexican | 5 | 1,800 |
| Italian | 4 | 1,760 |
| Indian | 2 | 1,440 |
| Soul food | 4 | 1,400 |
| Korean | 2 | 690 |
| Vietnamese | 2 | 620 |
The point: in Chicago a cuisine usually has an address. The efficient way to eat here is to pick the neighborhood first and the table second. Three of them we could verify at a source.
- Chinatown. It formed around 1912 in what is now the Armour Square community area, after Chinese settlers moved south from the edge of the Loop. The gate over Wentworth Avenue is the landmark. Chinese is the most-searched cuisine in the city by a factor of two, and this is where the searches end up.
- Devon Avenue. The stretch known as Little India is where Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi kitchens sit side by side. Ghareeb Nawaz, at 2032 W Devon Avenue, lists chicken biryani at $10.99 and was open until 2 am on the day we checked. It draws about 2,900 searches a month by name. It also has five locations now, and two of them, Lombard and Des Plaines, are suburbs.
- Pilsen. By the 1980s, 95 percent of the people in this Lower West Side neighborhood had some Mexican descent, and it is where you go for a taqueria rather than a tasting menu. For the tasting menu, MICHELIN stars two Mexican restaurants in Chicago: Topolobampo and Cariño.
Did I find one verified Thai restaurant to name for the second-biggest cuisine on the list? Not to the standard the rest of this page is held to, so there is no name here. A blank is better than a guess.
MICHELIN star restaurants in Chicago: 20 announced, 19 open
About 23,800 searches a month ask for the MICHELIN restaurants in Chicago. Most answers you will find give a number that is no longer true.
MICHELIN announced the current selection on November 18, 2025, at a ceremony in Philadelphia, as part of a new Northeast Cities edition. Chicago came out with 20 starred restaurants: one with three stars, four with two, 15 with one. Two changes made the local news. Alinea, which had held three stars, dropped to two. Kasama, a Filipino restaurant, rose to two. Feld won its first.
We read MICHELIN's own live listing on October 12, 2026. It shows 19. The missing one is Atelier, in Lincoln Square. It closed abruptly in May 2026. "We weren't able to get enough people through the door," its owner told the local public radio station. A star did not keep the room full. That is not a confession. That is just arithmetic.
| Stars | Restaurant | Cuisine, as MICHELIN labels it |
|---|---|---|
| Three | Smyth | Contemporary |
| Two | Alinea | Creative |
| Two | Ever | Creative |
| Two | Kasama | Filipino |
| Two | Oriole | Contemporary |
| One | Boka, Elske, EL Ideas, Esmé, Feld, Moody Tongue, Next, Schwa | Contemporary |
| One | Topolobampo, Cariño | Mexican |
| One | Sepia | American |
| One | Mako | Japanese |
| One | Indienne | Indian |
| One | Galit | Middle Eastern |
That is 19 restaurants and 25 stars. Every one of them carries a Chicago address on the listing. Earlier editions included the suburbs, but since 2013 every starred restaurant has been inside the city proper. So in Chicago, unlike Los Angeles, the star count for the city and the star count for the area around it are the same number.
This table has an expiry date. The next ceremony is on December 14, 2026, at the Glasshouse in Manhattan, and it covers Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia and Washington together. Anything you read about Chicago's stars after that date, including this, needs the new list. For how Chicago compares, see which city has the most MICHELIN stars.
The restaurants Chicago searches for by name
Almost half of the list is not a question at all. It is a name. Forty-seven of the 175 phrases name one specific business, and they add up to about 251,700 searches a month, 46 percent of everything. People are not asking where to eat. They already know, and they want the address. Three of those names are old enough to be worth a visitor's time.

- The Berghoff. Opened in 1898 as a saloon, at 17 West Adams Street in the Loop. It sold near beer through Prohibition and became known for German food. It still brews its own beer on site.
- Manny's. A cafeteria-style Jewish deli at 1141 South Jefferson Street, serving since 1942. You take a tray and walk the line. It calls itself the oldest deli of its kind in the country.
- Gene & Georgetti. A steakhouse at 500 N Franklin Street, founded in 1941. Georgetti was a nickname. The partner's real name was Alfredo Federighi, and he was named after an Italian cyclist.
One warning about the rest of that list. A name with a lot of searches is not proof the place is open, or that it is where you think it is. We could not confirm several of them at a source and left them out. The oddest row is "restaurant cleaning services chicago", 4,400 searches a month, which is somebody else's problem entirely.
Chicago Restaurant Week 2027: what the organizer says today
Four phrases, about 43,400 searches a month, are about Chicago Restaurant Week. It is an event with dates, not a place to eat, and two of the four phrases still say 2026.
The organizer's page, read on October 12, 2026, shows January 22 to February 7, 2027, for what will be the 20th year. The same page has a question and answer section that still says the 2027 dates "will be announced later in 2026". Both statements were live on the same day. Treat the dates as very likely and confirm before you book a flight around them.
What does not change: it runs 17 days, restaurants serve fixed menus alongside their normal ones, and the page lists brunch and lunch at $30 and dinner at $45 or $60. More than 550 restaurants took part in 2026, in the city and the suburbs. The participant list for 2027 was not published when we checked.
How to plan a food trip to Chicago
- Pick neighborhoods, not restaurants. One cuisine per neighborhood, one neighborhood per meal. You will eat better and travel less.
- One classic a day. A deep-dish pizza is a sit-down meal with a wait. An Italian beef is a counter order. Do not stack them.
- Both airports are in the city. O'Hare is on the Northwest Side, about 17 miles from downtown, and Midway is on the Southwest Side, about 12 miles from the Loop. About 3,800 searches a month ask where to eat at one or the other. The Berghoff runs a cafe at O'Hare, if you want one last local name before the gate.
- Check the town. Chicago addresses end in "Chicago, IL". River Grove, Lincolnwood, Lombard and Des Plaines do not, and each of them holds a restaurant that people call a Chicago classic.
- Check the date on any star count. Before December 14, 2026, the number is 19. After it, ask again.
