Are the World's Best Restaurants Open on Weekends? Mostly Not

Fifteen of the nineteen we could verify close on at least one weekend day

We locked the set before fetching anything: the 23 European entries on the 2025 list, ranks 2 through 50. Then we read each restaurant’s published hours. Nineteen gave us a usable answer. Four did not, and they are named further down, because a total is only worth as much as its denominator.

The denominator is 19 in every sentence of this post, never 23. If you prefer the most conservative possible reading, take only the 15 restaurants whose own website published the hours and ignore the four we had to source secondhand. That subset gives 12 of 15 closed on at least one weekend day, and 7 of 15 closed on both. The finding does not depend on the weaker sources, which is the check that matters.

Four of them will serve you across a full weekend, and three are not in a city

Here is the useful half of the result. If your trip is Friday to Sunday, these are the four restaurants in Europe’s top 50 that can feed you on both weekend days:

• Asador Etxebarri, Atxondo, Spain (No. 2). Closed Monday and Tuesday. Lunch only, which is its own kind of trap: there is no dinner service to miss because there is no dinner service.
• Reale, Castel di Sangro, Italy (No. 18). Closed Monday and Tuesday, and also closed for lunch on Wednesday.
• Uliassi, Senigallia, Italy (No. 43). Closed Monday and Tuesday.
• KOL, London (No. 49). Closed Monday. The only one of the four in a capital city.

Read the pattern rather than the names. Three of the four are rural or small town houses in Spain and Italy that take Monday and Tuesday off instead of the weekend, because their customers arrive at the weekend and would not be there midweek. The city restaurants do the opposite, because their customers are people who work in the city and eat out after work. The exception is London, which is large enough to support both patterns at once.

There is a practical consequence that has nothing to do with cooking. The four restaurants you can book across a full weekend are, with one exception, the four hardest to reach. Atxondo, Castel di Sangro and Senigallia are a drive from anywhere with an airport. If the weekend is the only time you have, you are choosing between a restaurant that is open and a restaurant that is convenient, and this list does not let you have both very often.

All nineteen, and the day each one goes dark

Every row below comes from the restaurant’s own website unless the source column says otherwise. Hours change, so treat this as the state of play in August 2026 and confirm before you book.

Two entries in that table deserve a footnote rather than a row. Piazza Duomo in Alba runs Wednesday to Saturday for most of the year and extends to Tuesday through Sunday lunch in October and November, so its Sunday is closed for most of the year but not all of it. Ikoyi in London publishes its schedule as menu availability rather than opening hours, because it is a tasting menu house and the two are the same thing there. We recorded what the site says, not a tidier version of it.

Sunday is the worst night to want a table, and Monday is second

Turn the table around and count by day instead of by restaurant. This is the version we would have wanted before booking anything, and it holds a result we did not expect.

The received wisdom is that top restaurants close on Mondays, and the received wisdom is not quite right. Sunday is worse. Fifteen of the 19 are shut on a Sunday against 14 on a Monday, and the Sunday group is the more consistent of the two. Meanwhile Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are perfect: every single restaurant in the set is open on all three. If you can move your trip by two days, you go from four options to nineteen.

There is a second pattern in that table that we only saw after computing it, and it is the tidiest result in this post. Not one restaurant in the set closes on Saturday while opening on Sunday. Every one of the eight Saturday closures is also a Sunday closure. So the weekend does not work as two independent days you might get lucky on. Sunday is the load-bearing closure, and Saturday closing is simply what some restaurants add on top of it. Practically: if a restaurant on this list is open on Sunday, you can assume it is open on Saturday, and the reverse assumption will fail seven times out of fifteen.

Eight of the nineteen are Monday to Friday businesses

This is the number that surprised us. Eight of the 19 close both Saturday and Sunday: DiverXO, Alchemist, Ikoyi, Steirereck, Frantzen, Septime, Arpege and JAN. Strip away the tasting menus and the awards and their opening hours are those of an accountancy firm. Six of the eight are in capital cities.

The more common shape is the Sunday and Monday pair, which 10 of the 19 close together. That is the one every restaurant explainer describes, and it gives a single brigade two consecutive days off rather than two scattered ones. Exactly one restaurant in the set breaks it: Kadeau in Copenhagen serves dinner Monday to Saturday and closes only Sunday, making it the one Sunday closure in Europe’s top 50 that is not also a Monday closure.

One honest caveat on the count. Steirereck in Vienna and Arpege in Paris do not say “closed Saturday.” They publish weekday hours and simply do not list a weekend. We counted both as weekend closed, because that is what their own pages communicate to a person trying to book, but the absence of a row is not the same sentence as a closure and we would rather say so than smooth it over.

Which cities this ruins, and which ones survive a Saturday

The count only becomes useful when you attach it to somewhere you were thinking of going. Nine cities in this set hold more than a footnote, and they do not fail equally.

Paris is the worst city on this list for a weekend trip, and it is not close. Both of its entries, Septime and Arpege, publish Monday to Friday hours and neither serves on either weekend day. A long weekend in Paris built around the two Paris restaurants in the world’s top 50 cannot include either of them. That is the single most useful sentence we can give a reader here, and no ranking will ever tell you it.

London is the opposite case and the only city in the set where a top 50 restaurant is available on both weekend days, because KOL closes only on Monday. It is worth knowing that the city’s other entry, Ikoyi, is one of the eight full weekend closures, so London’s reputation for being open is carried by one restaurant, not by the city.

For a Saturday specifically, the cities that work are Lisbon with Belcanto, Copenhagen with Kadeau, Barcelona with Enigma, and London with KOL. The cities that do not are Paris, Vienna, Madrid, Stockholm and Munich. For a Sunday, the list of cities that work has one name on it, and it is London.

The weekend is not the only way to arrive on the wrong day

We went looking for weekly closures and found something larger that we were not testing for. We are labeling it that way on purpose: the weekend count above was the question we set before seeing any data, and this was not. Treat it as an observation rather than a measured result.

Several of these restaurants shut for weeks or months at a time, and the closures are long enough to swallow an entire trip:

Now look at which restaurants those are. Reale and Etxebarri are two of the four that stay open all weekend, and they are also the two with the longest annual shutdowns in the set. Reale is closed for nearly three months. Etxebarri is closed for the whole of August, which is the month most people in Europe take their holiday. The restaurant that is reliably open on a Saturday can still be the one you cannot get into, and the weekly schedule will not tell you that.

We believed the restaurant's own website over everyone else, and it changed an answer

One rule did most of the work here: a restaurant’s own site is the source, and a directory listing is not. That sounds like bookkeeping until it flips a result.

Every secondary source we found for DiverXO in Madrid, including the city’s tourist board and MICHELIN’s own listing, says Tuesday to Saturday. DiverXO’s own reservations page says “DiverXO is open from Tuesday to Friday during lunch and dinner services.” Those are different weeks. Had we treated the own site rule as a formality, the fourth best restaurant in the world would have gone into this count on the wrong side of the headline.

Since the whole post rests on reading pages correctly, here is what four of the entries actually say, in their own words. Asador Etxebarri publishes “Cerrado lunes y martes,” closed Monday and Tuesday, alongside a note that it serves lunch only. Septime in Paris gives “lundi - vendredi” hours followed by “Fermeture samedi - dimanche.” Belcanto in Lisbon says “Open from Tuesday to Saturday” and “Closed on Sundays and Mondays.” Kadeau in Copenhagen says dinner runs “Monday - Saturday” with lunch on Saturday, which is how it ends up as the one Sunday-only closure in the set. None of these are hard to find. They are just in four languages, on four sites, and nobody had put them in one column.

We also kept the question fixed before looking at anything. The headline measure, how many close on at least one weekend day, was written down before a single restaurant page was opened, so this is a test rather than a hunt for the most dramatic number in the data. That matters because a more dramatic number did turn up, and it is the seasonal one above. It stayed in second place because that is where it belongs.

Four of the 23 produced no usable answer and are excluded rather than guessed at. Table by Bruno Verjus in Paris blocks our fetcher. Atelier Moessmer Norbert Niederkofler returned an empty page. Lido 84 is reachable but publishes no weekly hours at all, only that it is currently closed. Plenitude was dropped for a different reason worth stating: two sources disagreed, one saying Tuesday to Saturday and the other Wednesday to Sunday, so we published neither. A disagreement you resolve by picking the more convenient answer is not research.

Which list this is, and why there is no 2026 one yet

Annual rankings republish under the same name and the same web address, so it is worth being precise. This is The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2025, announced in Turin on Thursday 19 June 2025, with Maido in Lima at No. 1.

If you are reading this in late 2026 and wondering why we are quoting a 2025 list, here is the reason, and it caught us out too. The awards moved. The 2026 edition will be announced in Lima on Wednesday 4 November 2026, not in June. So for most of 2026 the current global list is the one published in 2025, and anyone assuming a June cadence will read a perfectly current page as a stale one.

The host city changed as well. The 2026 ceremony was originally announced for Abu Dhabi, and that announcement is still live on the organizer’s own site alongside the Lima one. Both pages describe the same event. If the publisher of the list can carry two answers at once, a travel blog quoting it secondhand can certainly carry the wrong one. Check the ceremony date rather than the year in a headline.

One more piece of scope. Every restaurant here is European, because that is the set we could verify properly, and it is 23 of the 50. This is not a claim about restaurants in Asia or the Americas, whose weeks may run differently.

How to plan a trip around a restaurant that is closed

The fix is not complicated, it is just the reverse of what most people do. Four rules that fall out of the numbers above:

• Pick the restaurant, then pick the dates. If one meal is the reason for the trip, its calendar outranks yours. Booking flights first and looking at hours second is how you end up with 15 of 19 odds against you.
• Read the restaurant’s own site, not the aggregator. DiverXO is the proof. The listing sites were unanimous and wrong.
• Check the month before you check the day. A weekly schedule will not warn you that Etxebarri closes for all of August or that Reale closes for most of spring.
• Assume Sunday and Monday are gone. Ten of 19 close that pair. Plan those two nights around somewhere that wants your business, and save the big booking for midweek.

The ranking tells you where the best cooking is. It does not tell you when the door is open, and the second question is the one that decides whether you eat.
