Best Restaurants in Naples, Italy: Four Stars, and a Pizza Ranking Naples Does Not Lead

By PlaceSets9 min read
Two whole Neapolitan pizzas, a marinara and a margherita, with the raised blistered rim the specification calls a cornicione, beside fresh mozzarella, vine tomatoes and basil

The best restaurants in Naples, Italy divide cleanly into two groups that almost nothing is written about together: four restaurants in the city hold MICHELIN stars, and a much larger number of pizzerias are judged by a completely different system that Naples does not currently lead. This guide gives both lists, with the dates attached, and explains the two things most guides to the city get wrong.

The direct answer first. In the MICHELIN Guide Italy 2026, the city of Naples has one restaurant with two stars, George Restaurant at the Grand Hotel Parker's, and three with one star: ARIA, Veritas and Il Ristorante Alain Ducasse Napoli, which is new in this edition. For pizza, the highest-placed Naples pizzeria in the 50 Top Pizza World 2026 ranking is Palazzo Petrucci Pizzeria at number twelve, with 50 Kalò at number fourteen.

Both of those sentences are more interesting than they look, and the rest of this page is why.

The best pizzeria in the world for 2026 is in London

50 Top Pizza is the ranking the pizza industry actually pays attention to, and its world list for 2026 has a result worth sitting with: not one pizzeria in the top eleven is in Naples. The winner is Napoli on the Road, in London. Second is Una Pizza Napoletana in New York. Third is Confine, in Milan.

Read that column of cities again. London, New York, Milan, Caserta, Rome, Los Angeles, San Francisco, São Paulo, Tokyo, Madrid, Tokyo, Jersey City, Providencia. Naples appears at twelve. The full 50 Top Pizza World 2026 list is public and you can check every line of it.

One honest note on what this does and does not mean. A ranking of fifty pizzerias worldwide is not a census of a city with hundreds of them, and it rewards the things a guide can distinguish: a chef with a name, a dough project, a room, a wine list. A city where the form is settled, the price is low and five hundred places do the same thing competently is structurally hard to rank. That is an interpretation rather than a finding, and you should treat it as one. The finding is just the list.

There is one detail here that trips people up. Palazzo Petrucci Pizzeria, twelfth in the world, is a separate venue from Palazzo Petrucci Ristorante, the fine-dining room on Via Posillipo that comes up in the MICHELIN section below. Same name, different address, different question. Searching one and booking the other is a common and expensive mistake.

Neapolitan pizza is a legal specification, not a recipe

The reason a pizza in Naples tastes different from a pizza at home is not the ingredients, or not mainly. It is the physics, and the physics is written down. Pizza Napoletana was entered in the European Union's register of Traditional Specialities Guaranteed by Commission Regulation (EU) No 97/2010, of 4 February 2010, and the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana keeps a parallel technical standard that its member pizzerias are inspected against.

The numbers in AVPN's published specification are specific enough to test a pizza against while you are eating it.

ParameterThe specification
IngredientsFlour, water, salt, yeast. No oil, no sugar
Rising time8 to 24 hours
Dough ball200 to 280 grams
ShapingBy hand. Never a rolling pin
Center thicknessNo more than 0.25 cm
OvenWood fired, 430 to 480 degrees C
Bake60 to 90 seconds
Finished diameter22 to 35 cm
Cornicione (the rim)Raised 1 to 2 cm, blistered, not burnt

Sixty to ninety seconds is the number that explains everything else. At that speed the outside of the rim sets before the inside can dry, which is why a Neapolitan pizza has a puffed, blotchy, slightly damp edge and a center soft enough to fold. It is also why the pizza arrives whole and uncut and is eaten with a knife and fork, or folded into quarters and eaten in the street, which Naples calls a portafoglio, a wallet. A pizza you can lift by the slice without it bending has not been made this way. That is not a criticism of it. It is a different object.

One widely repeated claim about all this is wrong in a way worth fixing. UNESCO's 2017 inscription is the Art of the Neapolitan Pizzaiuolo: the craft, the four phases of the work, the rotating movement at the oven mouth, the apprenticeship in the bottega. The pizza is not on the list. The people who make it are. If you want to see what was actually recognized, stand where you can watch the oven rather than the table.

The MICHELIN stars in the city of Naples, and two that guides still get wrong

Here is the full starred list for the city itself, from the MICHELIN Guide Italy 2026, cross-checked against two independent Italian sources: Scatti di Gusto's full-country list published when the guide was announced, and Napolike's city listing from August 2026. They agree exactly.

ARIAOneVia Loggia dei Pisani 2Paolo Barrale
Il Ristorante Alain Ducasse NapoliOne (new in 2026)Ninth floor of the Romeo hotel, Via Cristoforo Colombo 45Alessandro Lucassino

Four restaurants, for a city of roughly a million people. George is the only two-star address in Naples and the first the city has ever had. Veritas and George are on the same street, which is a useful thing to know if you are choosing between them.

Now the part that matters more than the list, because it will affect what you book. Two restaurants that published guides to Naples still describe as MICHELIN-starred are not.

  • Palazzo Petrucci Ristorante on Via Posillipo lost its star in the 2025 edition of the guide, published in November 2024. It appears on the published list of that year's star losses, and it is absent from both 2026 lists above. The restaurant is still open. It is the star that is gone, not the restaurant.
  • Il Comandante, the rooftop restaurant at the Romeo hotel, no longer exists under that name. The premises are now Il Ristorante Alain Ducasse Napoli, and the hotel's own restaurant page lists no Il Comandante at all. The new restaurant took a star in the 2026 guide, so the address is still a starred address, which is exactly why the error survives: everyone repeating it is half right.

Both of these appear on pages currently ranking on the first screen of Google for this search. Neither is malice. Restaurant copy is written once and rarely re-checked, and a MICHELIN star is a claim with an expiry date that nothing automatically removes. The habit worth borrowing: when a guide tells you a place is starred, look for the guide edition next to the claim. If there is no year, treat it as a rumor. We ran a similar check across the whole starred map in the cities with the most MICHELIN stars.

Most of Campania's top-end cooking is not in Naples

Search for fine dining in Naples and you will get results that are not in Naples, without being told. The region's heavy end sits along the coast and on the islands, sometimes an hour or more from the city center.

RestaurantStarsWhereDistance from Naples
Quattro PassiThreeNeranoSorrento peninsula

Campania's only three-star restaurant, Quattro Passi, is in Nerano on the Sorrento peninsula. Every two-star in the region except George is outside Naples. So a page promising the best restaurants in Naples that opens with Quattro Passi is not lying, exactly, but it is selling you a day of driving or a ferry. Decide which you are booking before you book it.

Two source notes, in the interest of you being able to check this. Published totals for how many starred restaurants Campania has in 2026 disagree with each other, so no regional total is asserted anywhere on this page. The named restaurants above are the ones that appear identically on both of the lists cited in the previous section.

Four Neapolitan dishes, and what each one is not

Naples exports its food more successfully than almost anywhere else on earth, and what gets exported is usually the ingredients rather than the form. The form is the dish.

DishWhat it actually isWhat it is not
Pizza napoletanaSoft, wet-centered, rim raised 1 to 2 cm, 60 to 90 seconds in a wood oven, served whole and uncutA crisp base you pick up by the slice
Pizza frittaA disc of the same dough filled with ricotta, provola, pork cracklings and black pepper, then deep friedA baked calzone, and not a plain fried dough snack
SfogliatellaTwo different pastries around one filling of semolina and ricotta: riccia is laminated into shattering leaves, frolla is a smooth shortcrust shellOne pastry with two names
Ragù napoletanoWhole cuts of meat braised in tomato for hours, the sauce dressing the pasta and the meat eaten afterward as a second courseA minced-beef bolognese

The sfogliatella distinction is the one that changes a purchase. Riccia and frolla are sold side by side in the same case and cost about the same, and they are genuinely different experiences: one shatters and sheds pastry down your front, the other is soft and behaves. Ask for the one you want by name rather than pointing.

The ragù is the one that changes a meal. Because the meat is served separately, ordering a pasta al ragù in Naples and expecting the meat in the sauce produces a small disappointment that is entirely avoidable. Tandem, in the old center, is built around this one dish and serves it all week rather than only on Sunday.

A narrow street in the historic center of Naples with laundry strung between the buildings above and graffiti on the walls

On the famous pizzeria: L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele on Via Cesare Sersale, near Forcella, dates its business to 1870 and serves only two pizzas, margherita and marinara. It runs on numbered tickets, so you take one and wait rather than booking. Published opening hours for it disagree across sources, so check the restaurant directly before you build a lunch around it. That advice is general: the cheap famous places in Naples change hours more often than their listings do.

What to do with all this

Book one starred dinner if that is the evening you want, and know that the city has four to choose from rather than the dozen a search suggests. Check the guide year next to any star claim, because at least two of the ones you will read are out of date. Eat pizza somewhere that bakes in ninety seconds and serves it whole, order the riccia or the frolla by name, and expect the meat after the pasta rather than in it. And add the word Italy to every search you run about this city. The full Naples list, checked and ready to open on a phone, is on our Naples restaurants map, and the other cities are under destinations. If you are traveling further north, Bologna and Florence are the neighbors we have written up.

Common questions

What are the best restaurants in Naples, Italy?
It depends on the meal. For a starred dinner, the city has four choices in the MICHELIN Guide Italy 2026: George Restaurant at the Grand Hotel Parker's in Chiaia holds two stars under chef Domenico Candela, and ARIA (chef Paolo Barrale, Via Loggia dei Pisani 2), Veritas (chef Gianluca D'Agostino, Corso Vittorio Emanuele) and Il Ristorante Alain Ducasse Napoli (ninth floor of the Romeo hotel, new in 2026) each hold one. For pizza, Palazzo Petrucci Pizzeria is twelfth in the 50 Top Pizza World 2026 ranking and 50 Kalo is fourteenth. For the Sunday ragu served all week, Tandem in the old center.
How many MICHELIN star restaurants are in Naples?
Four, in the city itself, per the MICHELIN Guide Italy 2026: one with two stars (George Restaurant) and three with one star (ARIA, Veritas and Il Ristorante Alain Ducasse Napoli, which is new in this edition). Many restaurants described online as Naples restaurants are elsewhere in Campania. The region's only three-star, Quattro Passi, is in Nerano on the Sorrento peninsula, and every two-star in Campania except George is outside the city.
Which is the best pizzeria in Naples?
By the 50 Top Pizza World 2026 ranking, the highest-placed pizzeria in Naples is Palazzo Petrucci Pizzeria at number twelve, followed by 50 Kalo at fourteen. No pizzeria in Naples is in the world top eleven for 2026; the winner is Napoli on the Road in London, ahead of Una Pizza Napoletana in New York and Confine in Milan. L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele on Via Cesare Sersale dates its business to 1870 and serves only margherita and marinara, on a numbered ticket system rather than by booking.
What makes a pizza Neapolitan?
A written specification rather than a recipe. Pizza Napoletana was registered as a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed by Commission Regulation (EU) No 97/2010 of 4 February 2010, and the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana inspects members against a technical standard: flour, water, salt and yeast only, 8 to 24 hours of rising, a 200 to 280 gram dough ball shaped by hand and never rolled, a center no thicker than 0.25 cm, 60 to 90 seconds in a wood-fired oven at 430 to 480 degrees C, a finished diameter of 22 to 35 cm and a rim raised 1 to 2 cm.
Is Neapolitan pizza on the UNESCO list?
Not the pizza. What UNESCO inscribed in 2017 is the Art of the Neapolitan Pizzaiuolo: the craft itself, its four phases of preparation and baking, the rotating movement at the oven, and the way the skill is passed on to apprentices in the bottega. The recognition is of the people who make it, not of the dish.
Why do searches for Naples restaurants show results in Florida?
Because Naples is also a city in Florida, a town in New York and a town in Maine, and the name is used by restaurants across the United States. Of 56 search phrases combining Naples with restaurant, 29 of them and about 61 percent of the total monthly volume name a specific business or place that is not in Italy. Only four phrases in the file contain the word Italy, together 1.4 percent of the volume. Adding the country fixes it: search best restaurants in naples italy, or search a dish such as pizza napoletana napoli.
