Best Food in Miami: Stone Crab Season, Little Havana, and Why Miami Beach Is Not Miami

Today is the first day of stone crab season in Florida, which makes this the one day a year a Miami food guide can open with a crab and call it news. (I checked. The state publishes the date, and it is October 15.) The best food in Miami is mostly not fancy. It is a pressed Cuban sandwich, a thimble of sugary coffee from a window on Calle Ocho, and a plate of cold claws with mustard sauce on the other side of a causeway.
The short answer. For Cuban food, go to Little Havana and start at Versailles on SW 8th Street. For stone crab, Joe's, which has been at it since 1913 and is in Miami Beach, a separate city. For the one big dinner, MICHELIN lists 13 starred restaurants in and around Miami, and one of them has two stars. And when you search for "Miami", know that more than a quarter of what people type names Miami Beach or another city next door.
Best food in Miami, by what you want to eat
Start with the dish. Every place below was checked at its own website, or at a source named in this guide, on the day it was published.
| What you want | Where | Address |
|---|---|---|
| A Cuban sandwich and a cafecito | Versailles | 3555 SW 8th Street, Little Havana |
| Stone crab claws | Joe's Stone Crab | 11 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach |
| Cuban dinner with a band | Ball & Chain | 1513 SW 8th Street, Little Havana |
| Cuban cooking and a serious cocktail | Cafe La Trova | 971 SW 8th Street, Little Havana |
| Fresh juice and fried pork | El Palacio de los Jugos | 5721 W Flagler Street (one of several) |
| Seafood at a counter | La Camaronera | 1952 W Flagler Street |
Notice that five of the six are on two streets, SW 8th and W Flagler, a few blocks apart. That is not laziness on my part. That is where the food is. The sixth needs a bridge.
Stone crab season opens October 15, and Joe's opened in 1913
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission sets the season: open October 15 to May 1, closed from May 2. Only the claws may be taken, and a claw has to measure at least 2 7/8 inches. So the crab goes back in the water and the claw goes to dinner, which is a better deal than most of us get on a Friday night in South Beach.
Joe's Stone Crab is the place everyone means. Joe and Jenny Weiss started serving seafood on the beach in 1913, and the restaurant is now at 11 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach. It serves fresh claws from October 15 to May 1 and frozen ones on a reduced schedule the rest of the year. The claws come cold and cracked with mustard sauce. Order the key lime pie, because you will not be back until next season and you know it.
Two things to know before you go. It is in Miami Beach, not Miami (more on that below, and yes, it matters for your taxi fare). And the whole city has been waiting for today, so book, or go early.
The best Cuban food in Miami is in Little Havana
About one in twelve searches for food in Miami says Cuban, Little Havana, Havana or Versailles. That is the city telling you where to start. Little Havana is the neighborhood west of downtown, and its spine is SW 8th Street, which everybody calls Calle Ocho.
Versailles is the anchor. Versailles has served Cuban food at 3555 SW 8th Street since 1971. Get the Cuban sandwich: ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard, pressed flat until the bread cracks. Then go to the walk-up window and order a cafecito, an espresso sweetened while it brews, served in a cup roughly the size of a thimble and roughly the strength of a decision you will regret at 2 a.m. It opens at 8 in the morning (9 on Sunday) and stays open until midnight, 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Ball & Chain is for the evening. Ball & Chain, at 1513 SW 8th Street, is a bar and restaurant with live music and doors that open at 11 a.m. every day. On Friday and Saturday it stays open until 3 in the morning. I have been told that is a perfectly normal time to eat croquetas in Miami, and I have chosen to believe it.
Cafe La Trova is the dinner reservation. At 971 SW 8th Street, closer to downtown, it is a Cuban restaurant and bar, and it is the one on this street you book ahead.
Flagler Street is the other half. A few blocks north, El Palacio de los Jugos has been a Cuban family kitchen since 1977: fresh juices, chicharrón, rice, beans and sweet plantains. It has several locations across Miami, one of them at 5721 W Flagler Street. La Camaronera, at 1952 W Flagler Street, is a seafood joint and fish market. Check the hours before you go: it closes at 4 in the afternoon from Sunday to Thursday and at 8:30 on Friday and Saturday.
Miami Beach is not Miami: the five cities in one search
This is the part most Miami food guides skip, and it is the part that decides how long you spend in a car. Miami-Dade County is made up of separate municipalities, and several of them have Miami in the name. The county's own list of municipalities gives their dates:
| City | Incorporated | What it means for dinner |
|---|---|---|
| Miami | July 28, 1896 | Little Havana, downtown, Brickell, Wynwood, the Design District |
| Miami Beach | March 26, 1915 | South Beach, Ocean Drive, Joe's Stone Crab |
| North Miami | February 1, 1926 | north of the city, on the mainland |
| South Miami | 1927 | south of Coral Gables |
| Miami Gardens | May 13, 2003 | the north of the county |
Miami Beach is the big one. It is its own city on a barrier island across Biscayne Bay, connected to Miami by causeways. Nearly a quarter of everything people type when they look for food in Miami says Miami Beach or South Beach. If your hotel is on Ocean Drive, your "Miami" dinner is very likely in Miami Beach, and that is fine. If your hotel is in Brickell and the restaurant is in South Beach, budget for the bridge.

One island that is neither. The Rusty Pelican, a name people search for, is on the Rickenbacker Causeway on Virginia Key, between the mainland and Key Biscayne. Its postal address says Key Biscayne, which became its own village in 1991. The island it actually sits on is Virginia Key. Miami geography rewards reading the small print, like a dinner bill.
MICHELIN star restaurants in Miami: 13 restaurants, 14 stars
MICHELIN's 2026 Florida selection was announced on May 28, 2026, the first to cover the whole state. Its live Miami listing, read on October 15, 2026, has 13 starred restaurants: 12 with one star and one with two, for 14 stars. They are spread over the five municipalities MICHELIN groups as "Miami and surroundings":
| Restaurant | City | Stars |
|---|---|---|
| L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon Miami | Miami | 2 |
| Ariete | Miami | 1 |
| Boia De | Miami | 1 |
| Cote Miami | Miami | 1 |
| Elcielo Miami | Miami | 1 |
| Hiden | Miami | 1 |
| Le Jardinier Miami | Miami | 1 |
| Los Félix | Miami | 1 |
| Ogawa | Miami | 1 |
| Stubborn Seed | Miami Beach | 1 |
| Shingo | Coral Gables | 1 |
| Mutra | North Miami | 1 |
| The Surf Club Restaurant | Surfside | 1 |
So the City of Miami holds 9 of the 13, and Miami Beach, for all its fame, holds one. L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon is the only two-star. Mutra, in North Miami, was one of two restaurants in Florida to earn a first star this year. If you see a figure for Miami that is larger than 13, it is probably counting another edition or a wider area; count the cities before you trust it.
Where to eat in Miami by neighborhood
Little Havana for Cuban food, coffee and music, all of it along SW 8th Street. Downtown and Brickell for the hotel restaurants and the river: the restaurants along the Miami River are the closest thing the city has to a waterfront dining street. Wynwood for murals by day and dinner after, and the Design District just north of it for the tasting menus. Coconut Grove for a slower lunch under the trees, and Coral Gables for a sit-down dinner. Then South Beach, in Miami Beach, for stone crab and an Ocean Drive table you are paying partly for the view.

Pick two neighborhoods a day, not five. Miami is wide, the causeways back up, and the best meal of the trip is rarely worth an hour in traffic each way.
How to eat out in Miami
Miami Spice is on right now. The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau's restaurant months are extended through October 31, 2026 at select restaurants: $40 brunch and lunch menus, $50 and $65 dinner menus, and a new Miami Spice Reserve tier from $95. Check which restaurants are still in it before you book, because the list is shorter in the extension: only some restaurants extended.
Eat Cuban early, eat everything else late. The walk-up windows are at their best in the morning, and dinner in Miami starts later than you think. Book the starred dinners and Joe's ahead; the Calle Ocho counters you just walk into.
Comparing cities? Miami came first on one of the two national rankings we compared in the best city for food in America. The rest of the US set: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, New Orleans and Austin, and every city we cover on the destinations page.
