Best Restaurants in Lyon, France: The 2026 Star List and How to Find a Real Bouchon

The best restaurants in Lyon, France fall into two groups that rarely overlap: the MICHELIN-starred dining rooms, and the bouchons, the small traditional restaurants the city is known for. This guide covers both, with the current star list, the two competing labels that certify a bouchon, and the dishes to order once you are seated.
The short answer. In the MICHELIN Guide France 2026, Lyon has four two-star restaurants: La Mère Brazier, Takao Takano, Le Neuvième Art, and Restaurant Paul Bocuse just north of the city in Collonges-au-Mont-d'Or. It has no three-star restaurant. For a bouchon, Daniel et Denise in Vieux Lyon carries the city's official label, and Chez Hugon on the Presqu'île is the well-known example of a traditional bouchon that declined it.
MICHELIN-starred restaurants in Lyon, 2026
The 2026 guide was presented in March 2026. According to Lyon Capitale's report on the 2026 results, the city holds four two-star restaurants and ten one-star restaurants within Lyon itself, with more starred tables in the surrounding towns.
| Restaurant | Stars | Area |
|---|---|---|
| La Mère Brazier | 2 | 1st arrondissement |
| Takao Takano | 2 | 6th arrondissement |
| Le Neuvième Art | 2 | 6th arrondissement |
| Restaurant Paul Bocuse | 2 | Collonges-au-Mont-d'Or |
The ten one-star restaurants in the city are Ombellule, L'Atelier des Augustins, Au 14 Février, Têtedoie, Burgundy by Matthieu, Prairial, Rustique, Miraflorès, Cour des Loges and Circle. Two of those were new in 2026: Circle, in the 1st arrondissement, and Cour des Loges in Vieux Lyon, which regained its star after reopening. Les Terrasses de Lyon at the Villa Florentine lost its star the same year.
Two points are worth checking before you rely on any other list.
- Paul Bocuse has two stars, not three. The restaurant held three stars continuously from 1965 until the 2020 guide, when it was reduced to two, as CNN reported in January 2020. It was the longest unbroken three-star record in the guide. Many pages written before 2020 still describe it as a three-star restaurant.
- A bistro in the MICHELIN Guide is not necessarily starred. The guide also lists Bib Gourmand restaurants, which are selected for good cooking at moderate prices. Cinq Mains in Vieux Lyon, for example, is a Bib Gourmand. It is a good restaurant, and it does not hold a star.

What a bouchon is, and the two labels that certify one
A bouchon is a small, informal Lyonnais restaurant serving the city's traditional cooking: pork, offal, freshwater fish, local cheese and the region's wine by the pitcher. The typical room has shared tables, checked tablecloths and a short handwritten menu. The word is used loosely, and many restaurants in the tourist streets of Vieux Lyon use it on their awnings.
Because the name is not protected, two separate organizations certify bouchons, and they do not agree with each other.

| Authentiques Bouchons Lyonnais | Les Bouchons Lyonnais | |
|---|---|---|
| Awarded by | Association de défense des bouchons lyonnais | Lyon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, with ONLYLYON Tourism |
| Since | 1997 | November 2012 |
| How to spot it | A sticker of Gnafron, the Lyonnais puppet, holding a glass of wine | Listed by the Lyon tourist office |
| Assessment | Annual certification by the association | Anonymous audit against about 20 criteria |
The older label. The Association de défense des bouchons lyonnais has awarded its Authentiques Bouchons Lyonnais certification since 1997. Member restaurants display a sticker of Gnafron, the character from Lyon's Guignol puppet theater, with a glass of wine in one hand. The photo above shows the sign in a bouchon door in Lyon.
The newer label. In November 2012 the Lyon Chamber of Commerce and Industry created a second label, Les Bouchons Lyonnais. It is stricter on paper. A restaurant must first hold the French state title of Maître Restaurateur, all cooking must be done on the premises, and the menu must include at least three Lyonnais starters, three traditional main courses and two regional cheeses or desserts. Assessment is by an independent auditor who eats anonymously, then inspects the kitchen. Dining rooms are limited to 55 covers.
The label is small by design. The Lyon tourist office list shows 22 restaurants, including Daniel et Denise in both Saint-Jean and Croix-Rousse, Le Poêlon d'Or, Le Bouchon des Cordeliers, Café du Jura, Les Fines Gueules and La Meunière.
Why the two lists differ. Some of the most traditional bouchons chose not to join the 2012 label. Chez Hugon, family run since 1968, declined it in 2013. A bouchon missing from the official list is therefore not necessarily a lesser one. The practical rule: either label is a good sign, and a restaurant with neither can still be excellent if the menu is short, handwritten and mostly offal.
What to order in a bouchon
Bouchon menus are usually a fixed-price set of starter, main and dessert. These are the dishes that appear most often, and what each one is.
| Dish | What it is |
|---|---|
| Quenelle de brochet | A light, oven-baked dumpling of pike, usually served in sauce Nantua, a crayfish cream sauce |
| Saucisson brioché | A cured pork sausage baked inside brioche and served in slices |
| Salade lyonnaise | Frisée lettuce with bacon lardons, croutons and a poached egg |
| Tablier de sapeur | Beef tripe, marinated in white wine, breaded and fried. The name means fireman's apron |
| Andouillette | A coarse sausage of pork intestine, served with mustard sauce. Strongly flavored |
| Cervelle de canut | Fresh cheese beaten with herbs, shallot and garlic. The name means silk weaver's brain; there is no brain in it |
| Tarte aux pralines | A tart filled with pink sugar-coated almonds cooked down with cream |
Wine is often served in a pot lyonnais, a heavy-bottomed 46 cl bottle. The usual choices are Beaujolais and Côtes du Rhône, both produced within an hour of the city.
If you are unsure about offal, the quenelle, the salade lyonnaise and the saucisson brioché are the safest orders. The tablier de sapeur and the andouillette are the dishes regulars come for.
Where to eat in Lyon, by neighborhood
Lyon's restaurants cluster in five areas. Most visitors stay within the first two.
- Vieux Lyon (5th). The Renaissance old town on the west bank of the Saône. The densest concentration of bouchons in the city, and also the most tourist-oriented. Daniel et Denise Saint-Jean and one-star Au 14 Février are here.
- Presqu'île (1st and 2nd). The peninsula between the Rhône and the Saône, around Terreaux, Cordeliers and Bellecour. La Mère Brazier, Chez Hugon, Le Garet and Café des Fédérations are all within a few streets of the Hôtel de Ville.
- Brotteaux (6th). The residential district east of the Rhône. Two of the city's four two-star restaurants, Takao Takano and Le Neuvième Art, are here. The Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, the covered food market, is just south in the 3rd arrondissement, near Part-Dieu station.
- Croix-Rousse (4th). The former silk weavers' hill north of the Presqu'île. Quieter, with a market on the boulevard most mornings and a second Daniel et Denise.
- Fourvière. The hill above Vieux Lyon, reached by funicular. Têtedoie, a one-star restaurant, looks out over the city from here.
Restaurant Paul Bocuse is outside the city, about 20 minutes north by car on the bank of the Saône at Collonges-au-Mont-d'Or. Plan transport before you book.
How to plan a food trip to Lyon
- Book starred restaurants ahead. The two-star rooms often fill weeks in advance. Lunch menus are usually considerably cheaper than dinner.
- Check opening days. Many bouchons close on Sundays and some on Mondays. Traditional ones may also close for part of August.
- Eat at lunch in Vieux Lyon. The old town is busiest in the evening, and the fixed-price lunch menu is the easiest way to try a bouchon without a reservation.
- Visit the market in the morning. The Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse is best before noon, when the oyster bars and cheese counters are fully stocked.

Why a search for Lyon restaurants can return results in the United States
Searching for restaurants in Lyon without the word France often returns places in the United States, because several American places have almost the same name.
Of 80 common search phrases combining Lyon with restaurants, at least 25, accounting for about 8,300 of 22,850 monthly searches, refer to somewhere other than the French city. Most of them are one letter away: Lyons, Colorado; South Lyon, Michigan; and Lyons, New York. Two more are businesses, Lyon Hall in Arlington, Virginia, and Mr Lyons in Palm Springs, California. Only nine of the 80 phrases include the word France.
The fix is simple: add France to the search, or search for a specific restaurant or dish by name.
